I Need More Money. Salary negotiations arent about whether you need mora money, or even whether you deserve more money. Theyre about whether you can get more money. This means understanding the market and your place in it, and that leveraging that information to your advantage. Oversharing not only wont get you more money, but it might also cost you your colleagues respect, and that has a much heftier price tag down the line than any missed opportunity for a pay raise. Bringing personal details into a negotiation tells the other person a few things about you, and none of them good. For example, you might expose yourself as someone who cant manage their personal budget, which will make a manager think twice about putting you in charge of the companys money. Even if your personal situation is no fault of your own, trading in TMI during a salary negotiation shows that you dont have a good sense of professional boundaries, which might make the boss feel uncomfortable working with you. Heres What I Made at My Last Job. This is a tough one because employers love to try to get prospective hires to share their salary history. (At least, where its legal. Several cities and states, including Philadelphia and Massachusetts, have enac ted or are considering legislation that would make it illegal to ask candidates about their previous salary.) Your salary history is irrelevant. The employer should be setting compensation for the role based on the duties that are involved in the job, as well as the qualifications needed to do the work. They might also consider factors like market competition, pay-for-performance, and other things that would give them the most bang for their compensation dollar. But your previous employers compensation plan (or lack thereof) shouldnt come into it. You might consider asking a friend to help you do a practice interview- and filming it, so you can see how youll come across to hiring managers during the interview and negotiation phases. Avoid poor (or too persistent) eye contact, hunched postures, fidgety gestures like picking at your clothes or hair or tapping your feet, or anything that makes it look like youre nervous. Remember that you have a right to be paid appropriately for your work and that its in your bosss and employers best interests to do so. If you can go into the interview regardin g the other person as a negotiating partner, instead of an adversary, it will be a lot easier to relax, smile, and make your case.

And interestingly, right now we have all females in our office, although that is notlage by design. Women in general are very strong individuals, but anyone can be successful in owning his or her own business, its just a matter of how hard you work and the good people you surround yourself with. I have a fantastic team. Im not doing this alone, but I have a wonderful team and a business manager that has been with me since day one. I cannot take all the credit for my companys success, because its been a great team effort. Ive been blessed to have great relationships with our clients and candidates, too.A woman-owned, 100 percent women-operated recruitment firm? Very niceand very unique.This unique setup particularly interested me because I remember reading a Forbes.com article about how women HR professionals often discriminate against at tractive female job seekers.The article explained how two Isreali researchers- Bradley Ruffle at Ben-Gurion University and Zeev Shtudiner at Ariel University Centre- sent out fake applications to 2,500 job openings. The researchers sent two applications to each job one application included a photo and the other did not. The two believed that resumes including photos of attractive candidates would receive the greatest response.This was partially true. Although attractive males received mora callbacks for bewerbungsgesprchs than unattractive males, attractive women were less likely to get a callback for an interview if they attached a photo. Why the discrepancy?The researchers concludedHuman resources departments tend to be staffed mostly by women. Indeed, in the Israeli study, 93% of those tasked with selecting whom to invite for an interview were female. The researchers unavoidable- and unpalatable- conclusion is that old-fashioned jealousy led the women to discriminate against pret ty candidates.Ladies, is this true?Now, when first reading about the experiment, one might assume attractive women were ruled out because of the unfair dumb blonde or dumb model generalizations. Yet, each photo in the study was also rated on how intelligent people thought the person looked and the results showed that there was no correlation between ones beauty and ones intelligence level(s).Are women HR professionals really discriminating against female job seekers? If so, this is really disconcerting. Why you ask? Well, look at the stats about women in the workforce (and, ladies let me tell you, theyre not pretty)Only 4.2 percent of Fortune 500 CEOs are womenWomen make up 4.5 percent of Fortune 1000 CEO positionsIn 2012- just like in 2002- among full-time, year-round workers, women were paid 77 percent of what men were paid.Women only held 16.6 percent of Fortune 500 board seatsIn 2011, at 31.9 percent, women didnt even account for half of all lawyersFrom elementary and middle sch ool teachers to computer programmers, women are paid less than men in female-dominated, gender-balanced, and male-dominated occupations (AAUW)What am I saying? Ladies, its clear that we need one another. Although more and more women (and mothers) are entering the workforce, we still face many inequalities compared to our male counterparts. Instead of being jealous and discriminating against each other, we need to unite and continue to advocate for change and equality.It may sound clich, but the phrase, United we stand, divided we fall, is very true. Being jealous and unfair toward attractive women only harms women in the workforce overall. Instead of preventing women from entering a company, why not be fair in your selection process? View the female job seekers not as threats, but positively as more potential women who can add to those lists of CEOs and board members and ultimately help turn our male-dominated, senior-level workforce into an equal and level playing field.

This was one of the central ideas to my book,Real Artists Dont Starve. You need a scene. But how do you find one?When we look at the lives of successful artists, writers, and creatives, we dont just see a collection of serendipitous moments. We see strategy. Whether intentional or not, a series of incidents and connections often allow a persons work to get the attention it deserves.And thisdoes not happen by accident. At least, not usually.One of the greatest examples of this is how Ernest Hemingway moved to Paris in the 1920s to join a scene of expatriate writers and artists who had taken up residence in the Left Bank. Almost every time I tell this story, someone will ask, But what if Icantmove?Do you have to move across the world to find yur scene? What if circumstances prevent you from doing so? Heres what to do if you fin d yourself in that situation.I also recorded a podcast episode to further expand on my thoughts. You can finish reading below, give it a listen, or both.Go where the magic isThe Rule of the Scene, as I call it, states that its easier to go where creative work is happening than it is to will yourself to be more creative. The research on this is pretty clear genius is a group effort, not the result of any single persons work. The concept of the solitary genius is a myth. We dont do our best work alone.At the same time, not all of us are able to pack up our things and move across the country or the other side of globe to find our scene. Does this mean were out of luck? Not exactly.We need a scene. That much is obvious. But you may not have to move as far as you think. Heres how this works. If you want to do your best work, you have a choiceYou can either go join a scene.You can create one right where you are.Either way, you dont get out of this. You have to find your scene, even if it means you make it yourself.Join an existing sceneLets look at the first strategy, which well call Go Join a Scene, (see Chapter 6 ofReal Artists Dont Starvefor more on this). The idea here is there are certain pockets of creativity in the world that are worth tapping into. These places and unique moments in time are sometimes called creative clusters.Researcher Richard Floridawrites about the Creative Class, as a group of workers who are particularly drawn to areas of technology and diversity. They intuitively understand that where we live affects what we do and how we do it.Travel writer Eric Weinershared the same phenomenonin his bookThe Geography of Genius. Some places, he argues, seem to have an it factor, something that makes that location a hotspot for creative. And if we want to do our best creative work, we would do well to tap into unterstellung places.One quality, according to Weiner, is that these places are unlikely - they can happen anywhere. When Hemingway sees a bunc h of poets and painters moving to Paris because the exchange rate is good, he decides to follow. There, he can live on a meager budget while growing as a writer in the company of greatness. So he goes. And he finds his scene.Thats one way to do it. But of course, there is another.Create your own sceneYou can either do what Hemingway did and go join a scene, or you can create one. Lets look at that second strategy, which well call Create Your Own Scene. If one way to do your best creative work is going where creativity is already happening, the alternative, then, would be to stay put.This, too, is a strategy. Because for every Hemingway in Paris, theres a Bronte in Haworth. Haworth, England was a small rural town where the Bronte family made their home. The daughters of a clergyman, Charlotte, Emily, and Anne grew up without much exposure to the outside world. To pass the time and to amuse themselves, they would tell stories to each other.One day, one of the older sisters Charlotte f ound some poetry written by Emily, which caused the older sister to share that she, too, had been writing. Before long, it was clear that all three siblings were closet writers, and thus began a literary collaboration that would belastung a lifetime.The Bronte sisters would go on to write some of the most influential works of literature in the English language, and it all began in a small village, far from the reaches of civilization. These young women didnt have to leave home to find their scene. In fact, some of them did leave only to return to Haworth because that was where they did their best work.Sometimes, the community we need is closer than we realize.You must moveSo which should we do? Go find a scene? Or create one? It may sound like contradictory advice if you can stay put or leave, then you really dont have to do anything.But thats not what Im saying. You need a scene. You need to find that place where your people are, that community you can connect and collaborate with to create your best work.But make no mistake. This requires movementFor some of us, that may mean a move across the roomFor others, it may mean a move overseas.In others, it may mean recognizing the opportunity already available.In my case, it meant realizing that I already lived in a city where creative work was happening. I just needed to join it. But this required action. I had to put myself out there, show up where other creative workers were gathering and make some connections.Over time, the more I made myself available to others, the more I became a part of the scene.If you want to find your scene, you must move. Standing leise is not an option. Either move to where the work is happening or recognize where it is already happening in your back yard and start putting yourself out there. Connections create community.How to create your own sceneA scene requires three thingsplacepeoplepurposeYou need a place to gather, a group of people to connect with, and a purpose for meeting.Th is was true of the Brontes, it was true of Hemingway, and it was even true of the scene I joined here in Nashville. We do our best work in community, and those communities are found in places, sometimes the ones we least expect. Our job is to go find that scene, wherever it is. Because once you join it scene, everything changes.Heres one last exampleEvery year,Eric Gale, a member of ourTribe Writerscommunity, comesto Tribe Conference, our annual gathering for writers and creatives. But he doesnt just show up. He takes it upon himself to put together a meet-up for other writers in the area. No one asked him to do this. He was just hungry enough for connection that he decided to create his own community.This is how you find a scene. You put yourself out there, going where creative work is already happening - whether thats in your own town, or at a faraway event. You do whatever you can to get to whereyourpeople are. Then, you do what Eric did you step out and make yourself as helpful as possible to others.And if you do this well, you win.What do I do now?Your next steps are simpleJoin a scene.Find a place where the people you want to connect with are already gathering. Maybe youre starting your career, wondering how to find that elusive work-life balance. Its a common concern.I found the family and career balance I needed - even in a leadership position. So, I wanted to share what it tak es to get there.Earn the balance you wantThe best way to gain work-life balance? Be good at what you do.Think of it as buying yourself flexibility by being incredible at your work. The better you are, the more control you gain over your schedule. The stronger your skills, the more leverage you have in the workplace.Maybe you want to work from home two days a week. Is that really going to be a problem if everyone knows youre extremely good at what you do?So, start thinking about what you can do now to build your skills and gain more leverage. Anything you do now to increase your value in the job market will help you gain the work-life balance you want down the road.I know it may not help you at this very moment, but it will pay off in the long run.Think of your future selfGenerally speaking, you dont have as much flexibility when you start your career. Youre not yet an expert in the field, and that means you probably wont have the work-life balance youre dreaming of.But as you move up the ladder, youll get more flexibility and autonomy.Your 20s are a time to work very hard. You have the most energy and the fewest responsibilities, so throw yourself into your work.Unless you started your family early, you have a lot of freedom in your 20s. Capitalize on that by giving it your all. I promise you, all that work will continue to pay off for decades. Create a vision of the balance youre going to need in the future, and work to make that happen for your future self.That takes care of the future, but what if you need help finding some balance right now?Optimize your dayEach day presents its own unique challenges and opportunities, but you have to find ways to make your day more efficient and productive if you want to leave work at work.Personally, Im a morning person. Its when I have the most energy and my mind feels sharpest. But not everyone works that way. I was talking with one of our scientists, and shes just the opposite.She spends the hour before she leaves work preparing everything she needs for the next day. Calculations, spreadsheets, experiments- she puts it all in place because shes drowsy when she comes to work in the morning. She gets everything ready so all she has to do is look at her notes from the night before when she arrives the next morning. And by the afternoon, shes completely awake and alert. Thats her best time.This means knowing yourself well and optimizing your day to take advantage of it.Most of us struggle to find a balance between our jobs and our personal lives at some point in our career. Finding that balance takes time. Anchoring.Anchoring refers to the idea that we are easily swayed by irrelevant information presented to us prior to making a decision.In a classic experiment, Kahneman and Tversky recruited students from the University of Oregon as subjects, spun a wheel of fortune and asked them to write down the number on which the wheel stopped.1The catch, however, was that the wheel of fortune had been rigged to stop only at numbers 10 or 65, rather than a range of numbers between 0 to 100.Kahneman and Tversky then asked the subjects two questions Is the percentage of African nations among UN members larger or smaller than the number you just wrote? What is your best guess of the percentage of African nations inthe UN?The results were astonishing.The average estimates of the participants who saw 65 on the wheel of fortune were 45%, whereas those who saw 10 had a lower average estimate of 25%.In other words, the subjects were anchored by the whee l of fortune numbers, which swayed their final estimations.Just like the subjects in this experiment, we tend to fall prey to anchoring on a daily basis.For example, youre more likely to buy a special deal sandwich for $5, if you previously saw another sandwich that cost $20.Even though the price of the more expensive sandwich is irrelevant to your buying decision, the cognitive bias of anchoring will lead you to perceive the lower priced sandwich as a cheap bargain, when it may not be.In judging the likelihood that a particular couple will be divorced, for example, one may scan ones memory for similar couples which this question brings to mind. Divorces will appear probable if divorces are prevalent among the instances that are retrieved in this manner. 22. Theavailability heuristic.The availability heuristic refers to our tendency to make judgments based on information that can be easily recalled from memory. 3For example, lets say youre driving on a highway at 70 mph like everyon e else, but then you see a catastrophic accident and the other motorists slow down to 50 mph.Because the possibility of an accident is more available in your mind, youre more likely to slow down to 50 mph as well, even though the probability of an accident occurring remains unchanged.The availability heuristic also explains why certain catastrophic events occur, like divorce. Heres an example explained by Kahneman in his book,Thinking Fast and Slow(Audiobook)Depressed children treated with an energy drink improve significantly over a three-month period. I made up this newspaper headline, but the fact it reports is true if you treated a group of depressed children for some time with an energy drink, they would show a clinically significant improvement.It is also the case that depressed children who spend some time standing on their head or hug a cat for twenty minutes a day will also show improvement.5. Hindsight biasHindsight bias refers to our tendency to look back at past events, adjust our worldview to accommodate the surprise and hold the position that I-knew-it-all-along.This cognitive bias is especially pervasive amongst experts, who tend to look back at surprising political elections and technological innovations, and reframe their wrong predictions to match reality.Within organizations, hindsight bias rewards and promotes reckless risk seekers, who tend to take crazy gambles that work. Kahneman explains this phenomenon in Thinking Fast and SlowLeaders who have been lucky are never punished for having taken too much risk. Instead, they are believed to have had the flair and foresight to ant icipate success, and the sensible people who doubted them are seen in hindsight as mediocre, timid, and weak.
